Current Events – Labor Day Closure

by Douglas S.

On Labor Day weekend Welch Public Schools shut down for one day. However, before the weekend began we had to shut down because of quarantine purposes. Later the next week the school was shut down because of a water leak.

I, personally, didn’t like it because then my grades got bad because I can barely do virtual school. I don’t like it because I don’t have any motivation to do my work, mainly because there are so many better things for me to do at my house and if I’m at school I don’t have much more to do. However, there was an upside. I also liked it because I could see some of my friends and play games with them. And I could also sleep in after I checked in and then do the work.

Sports – WPS vs. Wilson Football

by Zach T., Mason W. and Mrs. Miller

The high school game on August 27, 2021 was amazing. The score was 46-0 by half time. That might be a record for Welch, I don’t know. Gage made his first touchdown of the season which was incredible to watch and Noah provided strong defense against Wilson High School. For the middle school football players Trapper Johnson says “They went against the Mustangs but very sadly they lost the game. Caleb claimed that, “they had too many large middle schoolers [and] it’s no wonder we lost.” Thomas said our team didn’t just get beat, “They mopped the floor with us,” he said. Despite the loss to the Mustangs the middle school players seemed to bounce back pretty quickly without wallowing in the defeat for long at all. They are already looking ahead to the rest of the season with determination, which we find quite impressive. WMS players definitely have a winning spirit and we wish them the best of luck in their next game. Go Wildcats!!!

Current Events – BEDLAM BLOOD BATTLE

by Douglas S. and Mrs. Miller

On Wednesday, September 1, 2021 going on from noon to 4 P.M. in the Old Gym you could schedule an appointment, sign up with Mrs. Sutton or visit obi.org. To be a part of the Bedlam Blood Battle blood drive. This was a fun way to show your collegiate team spirit while helping out those in need. Donors could receive Hemoglobin A1C blood sugar testing, which helps monitor diabetes risk! Donors also received a free treat both for their contribution as well as to ensure they were in good health before returning to their daily lives. All donors also received their choice of an OSU or OU t-shirt!

After spending a brief amount of time speaking with those at the drive we observed that the process did not take too long.We asked some brave donors how it felt to give blood and while we are sure everyone felt good to be doing their part some of the HS students claimed that the needle “hurt”. However, when we asked why they decided to donate they said, “Because it could help millions of people around the world and help doctors perform surgeries.” All in all the drive seemed to be a success and we hope everyone will remember to come back out next year!

Sports – Lady Wildcats Softball Interview

by Zach T. and Mason W.

The high school lady cats won their game on August 24th against Foyil 20 to 5. But the junior high lady cats lost their game sadly. However, there’s more to come for both the high school and middle school. The middle school girls went against Foyil and lost 11 to 12 which was very close, so good job ladies! All of the girls got along well in the locker room.  We asked Addison Keith what her favorite play of the game was. “Probably the outs we got. They were pretty exciting,” said Addison. Addison added that she felt the team did the best they could and tried their hardest. When we asked what she would have changed about the game if anything she told us not  thing. We wish our middle school players the best of luck with their season and just want to say, keep up the good work!

Meet the Teacher Night – From a Student’s Perspective

August 17, 2021 was Meet the Teachers Night at Welch, Oklahoma. Come with me as I ask questions to one of the students that went.

“So, what are some of the things that you did?” I asked.

“When I got here, I went into the English room then went into the highschool to the Tech Ed room, then went into the art room (even though I wasn’t supposed to be in there) then went home,” said Phoenix.

“What are the things that you got from the teachers?”

“I got a schedule, went and got a calendar and a pamphlet from the English room,” Phoenix said.

“Who were some of the people that you saw?”

Phoenix said, “Me, my grandma, my brother, most of the teachers and some of the other kids from our class.”

“What do you think of the new teachers?”

Phoenix told me, “I think the new teachers are pretty okay and it’s a nice little switch up.”

I asked him, “How many new teachers do you think there were?”

“There were about 4 new teachers,” said Phoenix.

“Who all do you think was there?”

“I think almost everybody was there,” said Phoenix.“What are all of the things that you did there?” I asked. Phoenix said, “Well, I got all of my papers, and I talked to my teachers, talked to my family then got into my car.”

Around Town – Vinita Rodeo

by Jace J.

Last week there was a rodeo in Vinita. The events that were there were team roping, calf roping, steer tripping, bulldogging, and barrel racing. Team roping is where two cowboys each mounted on horses rope a steer, one ropes the horns and the other ropes the two back feet. Calf roping is where there is a cowboy on a horse who has to rope a small calf around the neck and dismount his horse and tie three legs together and then get back on. Then they loosen the rope and if the calf stays down for 6 seconds then that’s time. Steer tripping is where the roper has to trip the steer dismount and tie three legs and then get back on and slack then wait 6 seconds. Bulldogging is where there are two people one keeps the cow in line the other one wrestles the cow to the ground, and barrel racing is an event for women. They ride around barrels as fast as they can and back. There were a lot of people there, a lot of nice people there and the popcorn was not good, this reporter does not recommend it.
