Coach Gleaves

by Haden L. Addy S. Katy W.

Coach Gleaves has a lot of kids that like him. I like him. He is one of my favorite teachers. He has a lot of kids that enjoy what  he is assigned for work. I absolutely love Coach Gleaves. He is an awesome teacher and he teaches a lot of cool things.

Hello. I am the social studies teacher in the middle school. I obtained my Associate’s Degree from NEO A&M in 2004 and then my Bachelor’s Degree from Pittsburgh State University in December 2006. I have spent all but one year of my teaching career at Welch. When I am not teaching, I coach football, power-lifting, and middle school boys basketball.

Cheer Leader Car Wash

by Zack T.

On Saturday August 25 from 8 am to 12 held a window wash fundraiser 4 of the 5 cheerleaders showed up to help then several neighborhood kids came over to help. While the girls were very tired in the morning they worked very hard and cleaned somewhere around 10 vehicles. While there was no set price the girls raised $300 in donations. This money will go towards purchasing cold weather uniforms for the team. The girls especially raised enough money for nicer uniforms. One funny thing that happened was about an hour after the girls got dropped off one of the cheer parents returned with the truck they went mudding with. The girls had to clean chunks of wet mud off the windows. While they said it wasn’t funny they laughed the whole time.

Around Town – Mama Mia

by Jace J. and Mason W.

On September 23, 24, and 25 at 7:00 and 26 at 2:00 the Coleman theater hosted a show of Mama Mia. It was put on by Miami Little Theater. Adult tickets and senior tickets were $20. Students were $15 a ticket. There was a huge turnout. We asked Mrs. Miller, our English teacher and a member of the cast, how things went.

1. How many roles are there?          13 main roles, even more supporting.

3. Do you think it is scary to perform on stage?     I think if it was smaller it would be but since there were so many of us it was not that scary.

4. Do you ever get stage fright?       Every once in a while I get butterflies in my stomach.

5. How much time do you get to practice a day?      Between 3 and 5 hours. It’s not a paid position, it’s a part time volunteer job.

6. Why is it called mamma mia?      Well it takes place in Greece.

7. How many people do you think there will be?     I can only guess but about 700.

8. What time does the show end?       At 9:00 pm.

9. What is your character?        I am a supporting character. My character is pretty zoned out.

10. What does your character do?      I dance a lot by myself and I’m always thirsty.

Current Events – Homecoming Week

by Douglas S.

Every year starting in mid September to the end of September is Homecoming week in Welch, Oklahoma. We usually dress up according to a theme, and this year we did cowboy styles. There was a lot going on between the softball sendoff, door decoration contests and the parade Friday afternoon.

There was a parade where some people made floats and went through the area. There was also a send off for the highschool softball girls. Students stood on each side and cheered as they walked to the vans to go to the game.

For sports there is also something for the high school to do. They will pick the homecoming king and queen a couple hours before the homecoming game, then, around 10 to 15 nominees go onto the field and one gets chosen for king and one other gets chosen for queen.

Around Town – Gorilla Century – Pittsburg, Ks

by Jace J.

There was a bike rally at Pittsburg, Kansas called Gorilla Century 2021. The ride was 62 miles long on gravel 100, 62 or 38 miles on pavement  and stretched all the way to Big Brutus! It was hosted  by Tailwind Cyclist on Saturday September 4th and boasted plenty of well equipped rest stops, with friendly and helpful volunteers. The weather has turned out to be perfect!  Mid 70’s with cloud cover and a 5 mph wind. The weather has turned out to be perfect!  Mid 70’s with cloud cover and a 5 mph wind. The ride cared less about winning and more about finishing  the race. Some people rode their first race this year and burned over 2,000 calories .

Whitney Cantwell said she made it the whole 100, she had the best root beer float at mile 80 and she fell in the grass in front of every one. She said that at the beginning of the shutdown in 2019 she began riding a bike due to the lack of options outside of her own home. In 202 she learned about the Gorilla century race and wanted to compete.

“Sounds great right? Well in late August 2020 I was exposed to COVID. On September 4, 2020, I didn’t feel good. I felt short of breath, and was coughing like crazy!!! Two COVID tests (first one was a false negative) and loss taste and smell later, sure enough I tested positive.

I went from riding my bike 20 plus miles a couple of times a week to having a phone conversation left me short of breath and gasping for air. Anyways, my husband went on to ride 62 miles in the Gorilla Century last year, and I did not compete. At that point I could only ride my bike for 5 minutes at a time. I was super discouraged, but my husband kept cheering me on. So here I am now a year post COVID and what do I plan to do on September 4, 2021? My happy little butt is going to be on a bike trying to ride a century. Will I make it? Who knows, but you can bet your britches I am going to give it my all.” And, she did.

Sports – 1st WMS Home Football Game

by Zach T.

On September 7, 2021 Welch middle school had their first home game against the South coffeevile team. It started at 6 p.m. and it ended about 8 p.m. The score was 28-6, Dakota scored 3 touchdowns but he also missed a 2 point conversion. Caston also made a touchdown Dakota agrees with the coach that they have a lot of spirit. “We played our hearts out and we won.” Caleb claims that Dakota got about 200 rushing yards; it also was the first game for the Middle School Cheerleaders. Everyone thought they did awesome for their first game. The girls had fun cheering on the boys to a win. Mrs. Miller, the cheer coach, says she regrets that she didn’t get the banner out fast enough for the football boys to run through but she is also proud of the way her students, both cheerleaders and football players did at the game.

Around Town – Pet adoption day

by Jace J.

Last weekend there was a pet adoption at grove tractor supply. Presented by Grove’s Tractor Supply Co. & Bella’s Heart Rescue Foundation. “Bella’s Heart is a 501(c)3 non-profit foster and adoption based rescue, providing abandoned and abused animals a safe haven of care on their journey to their forever home.”

At this event you could bring your pet – or rescue one there! This one-day event featured nail trims, microchip inserts, wellness info, adoptions and more. It boasted the only kissing booth open during Covid – where you could come smooch a pooch!

I think it’s important that animals are adopted. Every animal needs a home because no animal deserves to die. If a home is not found animals will be put to sleep to reduce overcrowding of shelters. I personally, have about 5 dogs and I suggest you spend a lot of time with your animals and spend time with them. It can be a lot of fun.
